athletes-on-line was begun as a
tool to enable high school student/athletes to find financial aid packages to
attend college. Every year millions of dollars of grant and scholastic monies
go unused because many colleges have limited resources to go out and find
qualified high school graduates. In many cases, the students and their parents
do not know how to access the colleges to let them know that they are out
there looking for financial assistance. The Internet has provided the perfect
low cost exposure tool for colleges and students. athletes-on-line,
through e-mail and student profiles, can connect the college coaches at all
levels with the student/athletes looking for financial aid. The purpose of
athletes-on-line is to assist student/athletes in securing scholarships
and/or grants for post secondary education at no cost to the student, their
parent/guardian, or the colleges that are seeking them. This is accomplished
by increasing the student/athletes’ exposure to college coaches. Colleges and Universities with limited budgets can now travel to
geographical areas where they would not normally visit due to budget
constraints.
Funds generated for athletes-on-line are used
to defray costs of programming student/athletes’ academic and sports profiles
and connect them with colleges and universities that are looking for students
with the academic strengths to be successful in college.
athletes-on-line is a no cost public service link that will provide access
for high school student/athletes regardless of their financial or
socio-economic status. athletes-on-line will never deny a student the opportunity to search
for necessary monies they need for college through our service. Any and all
revenues from grants and corporate sponsorship will be used to enhance the
capabilities of athletes-on-line.
athletes-on-line was founded by Jon
Bernier. Jon is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where he played
Football. Jon has been joined by Greg Hansen, an engineer at WKRC TV Channel
12, Cincinnati, Ohio. Greg handles marketing for athletes-on-line. Brian Arlinghaus
handles all technical development, and Fred Bernier, who has recently completed
37 years as a Teacher, Administrator, and successful football coach, helps with
public relations. athletes-on-line has had the good fortune to develop a
relationship with Mr. Kenny Hansmire, executive director of the National Child
ID program. In January of 2002, Kenny invited athletes-on-line to visit
with coaches at the American Football Coaches’ association national convention
in San Antonio. While in San Antonio we were able to renew old acquaintances
with coach Homer Rice and legendary coach Roy Kidd of Eastern Kentucky
University, as well as meet and speak with many college coaches at all levels
of competition. As a result of our meeting in San Antonio, we have been
endorsed by the National Child ID Program. In June of 2002,
athletes-on-line received a grant from the Mayerson Foundation Student
Project at Northern Kentucky University. This grant allowed athletes-on-line
to produce our first Public Service Announcement (produced by Clear Channel
Communications) which is currently running in the Greater Cincinnati area on WKRC-TV Channel 12 and on Insight Cable. In addition, our PSA has just been
approved to run on Channel One News which is viewed by 12,000 high schools and
middle schools across the United States daily. We are currently working to
develop relationships with several major corporations. Our mission has been
and will always be to help high school student athletes find financial aid for
college. There will never be a cost for the student, their parent, or the
colleges that are seeking them.
